MELAKA: Melaka Umno Youth today lodged a police report against Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for purportedly trying to influence the public to overthrow the government.
Melaka Umno liaison secretary Datuk Zali Mat Yasin said the state’s six Umno divisions have lodged reports based on statements made by Dr Mahathir, which appeared to be urging the public to overthrow the Datuk Seri Najib Razak administration.
Zali, who is also the Tangga Batu Umno Youth representative, said Dr Mahathir had, at the recent PPBM annual general meeting, allegedly referred to Najib’s administration as a kleptocracy.
“In this country, we have a democratic process in choosing our leader, which is through the electoral system.
“It is sad to see Dr Mahathir, who had helmed the country for 22 years as prime minister and also as Umno president, and whom we have respect for, issuing statements against the government, which is unacceptable.
“We think it is better for him to remain silent. If you want democracy, Dr Mahathir can contest in the upcoming election instead of issuing statements that could incite political unrest among the people,” Zali said when met at the Melaka Tengah police station here today.
Also present was Kota Melaka Umno chief division Datuk Latiff Tamby Chik.
