KLUANG: Umno today criticised Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for backtracking on his principles by chairing a meeting between the opposition and 16 European Union (EU) ambassadors.
Umno vice-president president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said this showed that Dr Mahathir, a former prime minister, was a leader without principles.
He said Dr Mahathir would not have allowed the opposition to have a meeting with foreign envoys when he was prime minister.
“Worse, he would not allow ambassadors to meet with ministers even though it had been clarified that there would not be any discussions on politics.
“What more if the opposition wanted to meet ambassadors, Dr Mahathir would find ways to prevent it from happening.
“However, he met with 16 of EU ambassadors on Thursday without any interruption. For me, Dr Mahathir is someone who does not walk the talk.
“This means, whatever he had said before is meaningless,” he said after the ground-breaking ceremony for the fifth phase of Taman Sri Lambak and Paloh 2 religious schools, at Taman Sri Lambak, here.
Hishammuddin, who is also defence minister, said this proved that Dr Mahathir as the chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia had a political agenda.
Last Thursday, the opposition met the EU ambassadors for two hours where they had been asked to pressure Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to hold the coming general election fairly.
The meeting was reportedly attended by Pakatan Harapan deputy president Mohamad Sabu, who is also Parti Amanah Negara president, and Pakatan secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.
It was held at the residence of Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of EU to Malaysia, Maria Castillo Fernandez.
