KANGAR: Perlis Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has welcomed Pas spiritual leader Hashim Jasin to contest against him for the Arau parliamentary seat in the coming 14th General Election (GE14).
The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said as an incumbent, he is not perturbed to face Pas’ top leader or anyone who wish to contest for the seat.
“This is democracy … anyone can contest. It is not the first time that I am pitted against the Pas spiritual leader. I had done it before … there is nothing to it.
“Personally, I am ready and I trust the voters are prepared to choose who is suitable elected representative to represent them,” he said when met after attending dinner with state MCA leaders here tonight.
Shahidan was commenting on Pas’ decision to field Hashim for the seat.
He said although Hashim had won the seat in the 1998 by-election, he is not worried by the challenge.
“A big name is not enough to form a government thus the constituency will lose out. Look at Sanglang and Indera Kayangan state constituencies, despite their (opposition) wins, they cannot form a government and the people in the constituencies are suffering the consequence,” he said.
Earlier at the dinner, Shahidan reminded MCA leaders to work hard in wrestling back the Indera Kayangan seat and retain the Titi Tinggi seat which they won the 13th General Election.
