SHAH ALAM: PKR candidate for the Sungai Kandis by-election Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni is unperturbed by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s visit to the constituency.

In fact, Zawawi considers it a blessing, saying the former BN chairman’s visit will instead help win him votes.

He said the people had roundly rejected Najib in the 14th general election in May, so Najib’s presence in the constituency would help push voters to cast their ballots for PKR.

“Actually, I was informed that several of his planned stops (while campaigning for BN) had to be cancelled because the people of Sungai Kandis rejected him. Indirectly, he is giving me an advantage,” he told reporters at the PKR operations centre for the by-election.

Zawawi also claimed that Pas grassroots members had secretly told him they were supporting him in the by-election.

“In a democratic system, anyone can give their opinion. When I met with some Pas grassroots members who are my friends, or called them on the phone, they said they would support me.

“They also want a local candidate who understands the issues that the people here face, things like the deplorable condition of roads, road lamps and drainage,” he said.
