MELAKA: A PKR assemblyman today slammed the award-giving ceremony at the party's national congress currently taking place here, claiming it was biased and took for granted the real leaders who struggled to build the party 20 years ago.

Lunas assemblyman Azman Nasrudin questioned the move by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in presenting an award to party secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail instead of deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

“I don’t deny Saifuddin’s contributions to the party but he did leave the party in 2004. He went back to Kelantan and joined PAS. Once, he even said that PKR had no future.

“And another thing, if (Datuk Dr) Xavier (Jayakumar) as the vice-president can get an award, why can’t one be given to the deputy president too?

“He (Azmin) has been very loyal. He never left PKR and he never abandoned Anwar,” Azman told a press conference at the Ames Hotel, here, today.

Azman also questioned the identity of those on the committee who decided on the award recipients and asked the PKR leadership to reveal them.

He was also upset because a number of PKR leaders and members, who faced many obstacles in the last two decades fighting for the party, were not appreciated.

“Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail should be the only one to receive an award because she contributed a lot to the party and held the post of party president for almost 20 years,” he said.

Those who received the special award to celebrate their 20 years of contribution in PKR aside from Dr Wan Azizah, Saifuddin and Xavier were vice-president Tian Chua, PKR Pahang chairman Fuziah Salleh, Central Leadership Council Member Datuk Mansor Othman, PKR Kedah chairman Datuk Johari Abdul and Saifuddin’s personal assistant Zara Zahari.
