Malaysia, Thailand agree to cooperate on cross-border security issues

BANGKOK: Malaysia will take proactive measures and cooperate with Thailand to tackle several cross-border security issues in both nations.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, in his meeting with his counterparts here, both Thai Deputy Prime Ministers Wissanu Krea-ngam as well as Prawit Wongsuwan, who is also Defence Minister, had agreed to give their full cooperation to Malaysian authorities in addressing dual citizenship and international transfer of prisoners, among others.

"We discussed the Thai authorities' request for Malaysia to tackle the issue of our people holding dual citizenship, the congestion at the Sadao Immigration checkpoint, human trafficking, arms and drug smuggling, and also the issue of international transfer of prisoners."

He said matters relating to dual citizenship and congestion at the immigration checkpoint would be addressed in a Joint Working Group meeting held in Kuala Lumpur soon.

"What is important is the two-way cooperation, and as Thailand's neighbour, we will take proactive measures to ensure peace, safety and other border security issues are resolved immediately.

"I thank both Thai deputy prime ministers who gave recognition and approval for their full cooperation with the Malaysian authorities," he told Malaysian media here, today.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, ended his two-day working visit after his meetings with Wissanu and Prawit.

Earlier, Zahid had performed Friday prayers at Haroon Mosque and presented a personal donation to Imam Abdul Ahad for the mosque's building.
