KUALA LUMPUR: Umno, together with its Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties and several other non-governmental organisations (NGO) will hold a solidarity assembly in support of Palestine and its people.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, the rally, of which the date has yet to be confirmed, will be held in relation to the recent development where US President Donald Trump on Wednesday formally recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
He said, such move could again spark political crisis in the Middle East and lead to more radical movements among those who are angered by Trump's move.
"This is about humanity. When a powerful country meddle in other country's affairs and based on the decision by the president, I am concern that this will lead to a political crisis in the Middle East again.
"Not only that, since other Muslim countries are sensitive towards this issue, I'm worried that some Muslims will not keep quiet and start participating in extremist groups," he told a press conference at the 2017 Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre here today.
It was reported that Trump said the decision to recognise Jerusalem should not be construed as the US taking a position on whether, or how, the city might ultimately be shared.
However, he made no mention on the Palestinians and their long-held hopes for East Jerusalem to be the capital of a Palestinian state.
According to Zahid, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has met with the Fatah leadership, while Zahid himself had met with the Hamas leadership regarding the matter.
"Although Fatah and Hamas have different opinions on other matters, but they are united on this, that the US deicison is something that must be opposed," he added.
