PENDANG: Armed with a cigarette lighter in the shape of a pistol and a dark jacket, a man fooled his victims by pretending to be policeman before robbing them.
His activities were shortlived after police arrested him yesterday afternoon, after he attempted to rob the same victim for a second time.
Pendang district police chief Superintendent Fadzil Hashim said the man, aged 58, went to a kongsi house in Sungai Tiang on Monday and robbed a foreign worker of RM100.
“The 32-year-old victim assumed the man was a policeman after he saw the ‘pistol’ at his waist. The suspect took the victim’s mobile phone and demanded RM100 for the phone. The victim paid him the RM100,” he told reporters.
Fadzil said the victim later lodged a report at the Sungai Tiang police station but failed to identify the man.
When the ‘policeman’ returned to the kongsi house yesterday, the worker immediately alerted his supervisor. Together, they apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.
“Initial investigations showed that the man has 17 previous cases including 14 convictions since 1971,” he said.
He added investigations also revealed that the man was targeting foreign workers in Pendang and nearby districts.
Fadzil said the man has been remanded for a week from today and will be investigated under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code for robbery and Section 270 of the same code for impersonating a policeman.
On a different case, Fadzil said police arrested three men actively involved in house break-in cases in the district between February and March this year.
He said the men, aged between 20 and 50, were arrested separately in Pahang, Penang and Sungai Petani, last month.
“The first man, aged 23, was arrested in Rompin on Nov 20 while two others in their 40s, were arrested in Sungai Dua, Penang and Sungai Petani on Nov 26,” he said.
He said their arrests could help police to complete investigations on eight robbery cases in the district which involved a total of RM250,000 in losses.
