BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Kedah Customs Department seized more than RM800,000 worth of firecrackers from a container lorry which was attempting to enter the country through here on Tuesday.
The firecrackers were contained in 1,122 boxes which were hidden behind boxes of mineral water in the container.
Customs deputy director-general (Enforcement/Compliance) Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said the seizure was made at 4pm when a scanner machine at the heavy vehicle entryway of the Bukit Kayu Hitam border checkpoint revealed suspicious images in the container.
“Initial inspection showed that the goods in the container had not been declared. When the officers opened the container door, they saw boxes of mineral water.
“However, when the boxes were removed, they found stacks of boxes filled with firecrackers of various types hidden at the back,” he said at a press conference.
Zulkifli said the firecrackers, weighing a total of 20,755kg, are from China and were destined for sale on the local market.
He said the total value of the firecrackers is RM528,930, with unpaid tax amounting to RM312,069.
Zulkifli said the driver, aged 48, has been detained for 14 days to facilitate an investigation under Section 135 (1)(e) of the Customs Act, which provides for a fine of not less than 10 times and not more than 20 times the value of the goods; or a jail sentence of not more than three years; or both.
