KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) is now ranked among the world's elite higher education institutions, as 12 of its subjects appear in the QS World University Rankings 2018 by Subject, which was released yesterday.
The eighth edition of the list by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds includes the subjects of Architecture and Built Environment, Engineering (Chemical), Engineering (Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing), Engineering (Electrical and Electronics), Computer Science and Information Systems, and Agriculture and Forestry.
Also in the list are Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Chemistry, Accounting and Finance, Business and Management Studies, as well as Education.
The list also shows that UiTM has improved in four subjects, namely Social Sciences and Management (198th from 309th last year), Engineering and Technology (180th from 280th last year), Arts and Humanities (239th from 249th last year) and Life Sciences and Medicine, which has been ranked in the 451-500 range for the first time ever.
UiTM Vice-Chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Hassan Said said all the subjects were listed based on their performances in four indicators, namely academic peer reputation, graduate reputation by employers, the amount of Scopus indexed cited articles within five years, and the H-index (also extracted from Scopus).
“The H-index is a measure of scholars’ productivity and citation impact in their own field.
“Overall, UiTM has shown an increase with a score of 326, which was mostly contributed by graduates' reputation according to employers and the H-index from Scopus.
“The increase in graduates’ reputation indicator shows that employers' confidence in UiTM graduates continues to grow from year to year.
“Meanwhile, the increase in the H-index from Scopus shows that UiTM's academic staff has succeeded in producing quality research writing, which has become an international reference,” he added.
