SUNGAI PETANI: A 53-year-old man is believed to have been murdered at a motel here on Sunday for stealing a mobile phone.

Police found the victim hanging in the bathroom of a motel room in Taman Bandar Baru here. He had been badly beaten and had wounds on his head and body.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Saifi Abdul Hamid said the post-mortem results showed that the victim died from injuries to the head and body, which were inflicted with a blunt object.

Initial investigations by the police showed that the motive for murder was the loss of a cellphone belonging to one of three suspects, which they believe was stolen by the victim.

The three suspects are believed to have hit the victim with a blunt object before hanging him in the bathroom in the motel room with a fan wire.

Yesterday, Saifi reportedly said police believed they could solve the case following the arrest of a 31-year-old man and two others in their 20s.

Two of the suspects were arrested six hours after the incident and the last on Monday.

The three men are remanded for a week to assist police in investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
