KOTA KINABALU: A total of 1.12 million voters in Sabah had been gazetted by the Election Commission.

It saw an increase of 120,165 voters since the 13th General Election.

Sabah Election Commission (EC) assistant director (management) Mohd Yeozree Izwan Jemil said the latest number of voters was based on those who registered until 31 Dec, 2017.

According to the state EC statistic, there were 998,844 gazetted voters in Sabah during the previous election.

“We will usually undertake gazettement every quarter (three months) and people can still register as voters prior to election,” he told reporters after the media briefing on 14th General Election (14GE) preparation here, today.

“However, those who register as voters in the first quarter (of this year) do not necessarily mean they can vote.

“It will depend on the headquarters’ instruction whether to use voters gazetted as of the fourth quarter of last year,” he said.

He took example of the GE13 in 2013 where they only use gazetted voters as of the fourth quarter of 2012.

Speaking on the state EC preparation, Mohd Yeozree said there would be 20,000 staff working throughout the election period in the state.

He, however, said the manpower would increase should the 13 proposed new state constituencies be included in the upcoming general election.

“We expect Assistant Returning Officers to increase and the Returning Officers will identify this matter. As we speak, we are running on 60 (state seats) and there are 20,000 staff,” he said.

Yeozree stressed the commission’s preparation is on track, stressing the delivery of materials is on schedule while logistics management such vehicles, boats, and helicopters is in place.

“We are ready and there is no major problem. It’s just a matter of finalising certain areas. We have briefed the returning officers, heads of polling station, polling and counting agents as well as political parties.

“We actually kicked start our briefing in March last year and now we are just refreshing,” he said.

During the media briefing, Yeozree briefed Sabah media fraternity on the dos and don’ts during election.
