I was travelling in the city last week and stopped at a traffic light next to a shopping complex.

While waiting for the light to turn green, I saw a small group of food delivery riders waiting under a nearby bridge, perhaps to embark on their next order.

I have also noticed other food delivery riders wearing flip flops, which is dangerous.

My immediate thought when observing both incidences was that these riders were courting danger.

Their employers must be held responsible as it is the employers’ responsibility to ensure the safety of employees.

Although this issue has been highlighted in the media, there has been little improvement.

In terms of buying ready-to-eat food, technology has given us access to restaurants and menu options, all at our fingertips.

But we cannot continue to enjoy this convenience if it comes at the expense of compromised safety standards.

The Malaysia Consumers Movement, therefore, calls on food delivery businesses to ensure the safety of their front-liners.

Riders must be made to undergo road safety training with audit checks and action taken against those who violate or ignore rules.
