KUALA LUMPUR: Professional pair Arif Latif-Azriyn Nur Ayup pulled off a major upset in the National badminton championships at Stadium Juara today.

They downed national No 2 Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 21-17, 18-21, 21-11 in the men’s doubles semi-finals, and will meet top seeds Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in the final tomorrow.

“It has been a long time (2015) since I played together with Azriyn,” said Arif Latif.

“We will team up again for international tournaments starting April.

“We planned to beat a few top pairs in this national championships.”

Asked about their chances of getting selected for the Thomas Cup in Bangkok in May, Arif Latif admitted that their chances are slim.

“I feel that we won’t get to play in the Thomas Cup,” said the Negri Sembilan player.

V Shem-Wee Kiong reached the final after beating third seeds Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen 21-13, 23-21.

In the women’s doubles, Goh Yea Ching-Soong Fie Cho reached the final by beating Tee Jing Yi-Yap Zhen 21-14, 22-20.

In the other semi-final, Chow Mei Kuan-Yap Cheng Wen ousted Vivian Hoo-Teoh Mei Xing 21-17, 20-22, 21-19.
