BA of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Wong Choong Hann (pic) believes Malaysia will have three shots at meeting their one-gold target at the Philippines Sea Games.
While men’s doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin are the obvious choices, Choong Hann feels that they stand just as good a chance to hit the jackpot through Lee Zii Jia in men’s and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai in mixed doubles.
“On paper, our best bet for gold is through the men’s doubles, but that doesn’t mean they are the only ones who can win gold,” said Choong Hann, who arrived in Manila with the national squad yesterday.
“Zii Jia has a chance and as do Soon Huat-Shevon. They all understand that they have the potential to win and know their responsibilities. Everyone has to continuously support each other.”
BAM have the shuttlers a one-gold target for the Games after Malaysia bagged one gold, five silver and two bronze at the KL edition in 2017.
Goh Jin Wei, who delivered Malaysia’s sole gold two years ago, is not competing this time as she is still recovering after successfully undergoning a colectomy surgery, a procedure to remove part of her colon in a bid to save her career.
The Malaysian men and women’s teams will begin their campaign against hosts Philippines and Cambodia respectively at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Manila tomorrow (Sunday).
