KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian women were unable to pull off any heroics as they went down in a flat 3-0 defeat to Japan in the semi-finals of the Asian Team Championships.

After taking Japan the distance before losing 3-2 in the group stage, there were hopes for a similar performance at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila on Saturday.

But World No 3 Akane Yamaguchi avenged her group stage defeat to Soniia Cheah by scoring a 21-17, 21-18 win.

The Uber Cup champions raced to a 2-0 lead when Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota thrashed scratch pair Lee Meng Yean-Yap Cheng Wen 21-11, 21-4.

And Japan sealed the win when Sayaka Takahashi defeated S. Kisona 21-13, 21-13.

Despite the defeat, Malaysia still qualified for the Uber Cup Finals in Denmark in May by virtue of making the semi-finals in Manila.
