NILAI: The all new National Velodrome in Nilai, Negri Sembilan will be the country's new cycling hub for all national cyclists, aspiring champions, biking enthusiasts and all Malaysians.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the spanking RM80 million velodrome will take over from Velodrome Rakyat in Ipoh, Perak which is being upgraded as well as the Cheras Velodrome in Kuala Lumpur which will be demolished.
“This world class velodrome in Nilai was built as the country wants to produce more world class cycling champions,” Khairy said earlier today at the launch of the new sports facility.
Also present was Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
With a racing distance of 250 meters, the velodrome started construction in January 2015 and handed over to Khairy's ministry on May 20 this year. The construction was overseen by the Works Ministry.
The velodrome's cycling track is built of Siberian spruce and has a capacity of 2,000 spectators and was accorded with first class accreditation by Switzerland-based Union Cycliste Internationale.
The launching event also broke tradition when cycling legends launched the new velodrome instead of the ministers.
The cycling greats are Ng Joo Ngan, M. Kumaresan, Rosman Alwi, Josiah Ng and "Pocket Rocketman" Azizulhasni Awang.
The Nilai velodrome will also be the venue for all cycling events at the KL SEA Games and KL ASEAN Para Games which will be held from August 19-30 and September 17-23 respectively.
