GOLD COAST: Things are getting from bad to worse for Azizulhasni Awang as he has withdrawn from Saturday's individual sprint at the Commonwealth Games due to illness.

The Melbourne-based cyclist, who is down with viral infection in his lungs, however, will carry on with Friday's keirin.

National coach John Beasley has revealed that Azizulhasni is still feeling unwell.

"Azizulhasni will not race in the sprint. He has been sick since the Asian Track Championships (in February). We will see what happens tomorrow.

"It is time for Shah Firdaus Sahrom to step up and go for glory in the keirin.

"We have decided not to let Azizulhasni compete in too many races as his condition may get worse. As a coach, I do not want to put him in danger," said Beasley.

On Thursday, the national cyclists failed to make an impression at the Anna Meares Velodrome. None of them made it to the podium.
