KUALA LUMPUR: Giant Cycling Team’s rider from China, Chen Zhiwen has been disqualified from the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) after he was found to be guilty of assaulting another rider as soon as competition ended in Kuala Terengganu yesterday (Tuesday) evening.

Chen was found to have assaulted Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) rider Mohd Hariff Salleh after the end of the third stage of the LTdL from Kota Baru to Kuala Terengganu which covered a distance of 166km.

In the report filed by the LTdL commissar, the decision was made to disqualify Chen from the race in accordance with Article 30.1 for violent conduct towards another rider.

Chen Zhiwen will be punished under Article 37 for his violent conduct that has tarnished the image of the sport of cycling and it carries a fine.

Mohd Hariff has also been found guilty and fined for his conduct in retaliating to Chen’s unruly behaviour.

The incident is said to have taken place near the Payang market in Kuala Terengganu which was recorded by members of the public, where Chen is said to have lost his cool and confronted Hariff, leading to a heated argument that got physical, before other fellow riders intervened in an attempt to diffuse the tense situation.

The 39 second video clip has gone viral on social media sites since last night (Tuesday).
