FOLLOWING golden runs in the previous Sea Games editions, Malaysia’s recurve archery team ended their campaign with only a silver and bronze to show in Manila.
Yesterday, the men’s trio of Khairul Anuar Mohamad, Haziq Kamaruddin and Zarif Syahiir Zolkepeli failed in their final attempt, losing 5-4 to Indonesia Arif Pangestu, Hendra Purnama and Riau Ega Salsabilla at Clark Parade in Mabalacat.
In the mixed team event, Malaysia’s Khairul Anuar-Nur Afisa Abdul Halil defeated Myanmar’s Nwe Thidaroo-Htike Linn in the bronze-medal playoff.
Malaysia set a five-gold target for the Sea Games, but have so far won only a silver and a bronze.
However, there is still hope as Malaysia have reached the finals of the women’s individual compound (Fatin Mat Salleh) and men’s team today.
Khairul Anuar, a world meet silver medallist, was lost for words.
“We have been winning the team gold since the 2011 Indonesia edition. It is a very disappointing end to our campaign.
“The team failed because of the unpredictable wind condition and our failure to adapt to the atmosphere here,” he said.
For the record, Malaysia were overall champions in archery in the last three Sea Games editions.
