KUALA LUMPUR: That was an old video and he is surprised it has only gone viral now.
Bruneian singer Fakhrul Razi Ibrahim, 37, is nevertheless delighted that fans from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and his home country love it and since it was uploaded on YouTube a week ago, it has received more than 450,000 views.
Hundreds of fans have congratulated him for his impressive performance of Bollywood songs and suggested he come up with a Hindi album.
The video recorded in early 2016 showed Fakhrul wow Indian fans in his audition for Mumbai-based reality talent show Dil Hai Hindustani.
He performed several Bollywood songs fluently and the show's judges - vocalists and musicians Karan Johar, Badshah, Shekhar Ravjiani and Shalmali Kholgade were mesmerised.
"I made the cut, and after 10 competitive weeks, finished in the top seven," said Fakhrul when interviewed by the New Straits Times today.
More than 60 foreign contestants participated in Dil Hai Hindustani, but three made it to the final 10.
"I was the only Southeast Asian and proudly dressed in my national costume. The other two were Ben Parag of the US and Haitham of Oman," he said, adding that his family encouraged him to join the competition.
Fakhrul, however feels he has a long way to go before he can record a Hindi album, and would rather sing Bollywood-influenced Malay songs.
"I love Hindi songs, it's an interest I've acquired over the last 10 years. I'm still awkward speaking the language," he said.
Thanking fans for their support, Fakhrul does not rule out releasing Hindi songs in future.
Fakhrul is promoting a new, self-penned single, Tanpa Aku.
Fakhrul's next dream destination is South America and he wants to sing in Spanish.
Fakhrul started his career in 2004 and his singles include Pertama Kali, Rahmat and Wake Up.
He has written songs since he was 14, and in 2013, he represented Brunei in the World Championship Of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood.
He has also won several music awards in Malaysia and Brunei including Radio Televisyen Brunei 's Pilihan Akira Talentime 2004 and Best Pop Vocalist (Male) in AVIMA (Asia Pacific Voice Independent Music Awards) 2010.
