KUALA LUMPUR: K-pop fans were thrilled when the opening ceremony of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games featured a string of hit songs by some of the biggest artistes in the South Korean music scene.

According to Soompi, the event which took place yesterday at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, also represented South Korea's first Olympic games in three decades.

Following tradition, the ceremony featured a parade of nations segment where each country’s athletes entered the stadium.

The atmosphere was apparently party-like as the background music to the event included upbeat dance remixes of classic Korean songs, as well as popular contemporary tracks such as PSY’s Gangnam Style, TWIC

E’s Likey, BIGBANG’s Fantastic Baby, BTS’s DNA, and Red Velvet’s Red Flavor.

The traditional Korean folk song, Arirang was played when athletes from North and South Korea made their entrance together.

The opening ceremony also saw Deulgukhwa’s Jeon In Kwon, Lee Eun Mi, Guckkasten’s Ha Hyun Woo, and Bolbbalgan4’s Ahn Ji Young performing John Lennon’s Imagine together.

The 2018 PyeongChang Olympics Winter Games is expected to end on Feb 25, with more popular K-Pop artistes such as EXO and CL in the lineup to perform at the closing ceremony.
