KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning actor Beto Kusyairy is very grateful to have avoided a deadly accident involving airplanes recently.

The 38-year-old actor was on a London-bound Malaysia Airlines flight on Tuesday which almost collided with a Virgin Atlantic VS251 airplane in mid-air at Heathrow Airport in the capitol of England.

In a news report yesterday, he said: “Praise God, there was no actual accident. I was in the aircraft (MH4) when the incident happened.”

He added: “Our pilot had calmly informed us that he had received an order at the last minute to circle around first before landing.”

Beto, who is now in Wales for the filming of the telemovie Aku Bukan Gila, also thanked the pilot for his calm handling of the situation which ensured that the passangers remained safe and cool as well.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) issued an official statement today that confirmed the pilot of MH4 had followed the correct standard operating procedure (SOP) after discovering the possibility of a collision with the Virgin Atlantic aircraft.

The incident occurred while the two airplanes were approaching Heathrow Airport.

The MH4 aircraft from KL to London Heathrow was preparing to land when instructions were given from the air traffic control tower to make a turn around due to the landing strip being used by another airliner.

The Virgin Atlantic VS251 airplane from Shanghai was also preparing for landing when the MAS airplane was in its way.

According to the same report, the Virgin aircraft had confirmed that an airplane had come into close proximity at a distance of 4.8 kilometres.
