KUALA LUMPUR: The Agriculture National Key Economic Area (NKEA) remained sustainable throughout 2014, with several achievements including high-value herbal products development initiative.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the Agriculture NKEA would continue to be developed to ensure there was sufficient food sources for the rakyat as well as in the aspect of food security for the country.
"I was made to understand that research results on the commercial use of a herb, which are extended to pre-clinical and clinical trials, are able to boost the value of the herbal product.
"For example, Tongkat Ali herbal extract, after standard process, is able to reach a price of RM2,800 per kilogramme (kg) compared with the price of raw Tongkat Ali which is priced at only RM2 a kg," he said in his speech at the launch of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) Annual Report 2014 here, today.
He said the Agriculture NKEA also played an important role as a facilitator to continue the ability of big companies while empowering small enterprises in the economic sector. --Bernama
