IPOH: Former Perak Wanita MIC chief S. Thangeswary has been elected as the new state assembly Speaker, making her the first woman to hold the post in the state.

Thangeswary, who is also former Wanita MIC vice-chief, garnered 30 votes, defeating Batu Gajah Member of Parliament S. Sivakumar of DAP, via a voting process at the fourth term of the 13th Perak state assembly sitting.

Earlier, Kota Tampan assemblyman Datuk Saarani Muhamad had proposed Thangeswary’s name as Speaker; his nomination was supported by Chenderiang assemblyman Datuk Mah Hang Soon.

She was sworn in as Speaker in front of Perak state assembly secretary Rumaizi Baharin.

Thangeswary replaces Datuk Seri S. K. Devamany, who recently vacated the position to take up a post as a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

She was Barisan Nasional’s candidate for the Hutan Melintang seat in the 2008 General Election.
