IPOH: Former Olympic silver medalist Cheah Soon Kit is confident that Malaysia will be able to get the country's first gold medal tonight.
The 48-year-old former national badminton player said he has a strong feeling that it is achievable, especially after Datuk Lee Chong Wei managed to overcome his 'phobia' by beating his nemesis Lin Dan from China last night.
"Lee has a very good chance of winning the gold tonight as he had gained his confidence.
"But still, anything can happen in an Olympic game," said Cheah in a telephone interview here today.
Cheah was a Malaysian badminton player in the men's double and was once dubbed as 'The Killer' due to his strong and powerful smash.
Together with his partner Yap Kim Hock, they won the silver medal during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Cheah said what was important now is for Lee to remain mentally strong and not underestimate his opponent.
"Lee had beaten Chen Long during the Malaysia Open recently and tonight, they will meet again."
He added that although his opponent is strong, Cheah felt that Lee will emerge as the winner.
