BINTULU: Six wooden stilt houses, located on the Batang Kemena river, were gutted by fire this morning.

The blaze broke out at one of the six riverside houses at Kampung Masjid, Jalan Abang Galau here at about 10am.

A column of thick, black smoke could be seen rising from the area from across the city.

A fire and rescue spokesman said the Bintulu station received a distress call and deployed five firefighters to the scene, located about five kilometres away.

"Our men took about five minute to reach there. However, the fire had destroyed the houses," he said.

No injuries or casualties were reported.
