JOHOR BARU: A senior citizen was hacked to death by three men during a robbery at his house in Kampung Sungai Tiram in Ulu Tiram here early Thursday morning.

During the 4am incident, M Subramaniam, 62, is said to have confronted the intruders, who proceeded to attack him with a machete, an iron rod and a wooden stick.

The victim suffered fatal injuries to the head and body.

Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Jokhiri Abd Aziz said that at the time of the incident, Subramaniam was asleep in the house with five other family members.

"Our initial investigation shows that the robbers had entered the house through a window before being confronted by the victim.

“The victim's 38-year-old son was also attacked with the same weapons and suffered injuries to the head," said Jokhiri.

He said the robbers then ransacked the house and ran off with RM10,000 and S$1,000 in cash, jewellery worth about RM5,000, a laptop computer and five mobile phones.

"The victim was taken to the Sultan Ismail Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 10.40am, while the son was taken to the same hospital and is being treated for injuries to the head," said Jokhiri.

He added that following a report lodged by the family, police arrested three men and one woman, all Indonesians, in a series of raids in the surrounding area.

"Those arrested are between 20 and 50, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," said Jokhiri.

He urged anybody who might have any information on the case to contact the state police contingent hotline at 07-221 2999, or the Seri Alam police headquarters hotline at 07-386 4222 to help in the investigation.
