SHAH ALAM: In conjunction with the school holidays, 50 children participated in a mass circumcision organised by the General Surgery Department of the Shah Alam Hospital here today.
Its director, Datin Paduka Dr Hasni Hanapi said the programme was part of the hospital's community service responsibility, which has been carried out since last year.
"Due to overwhelming response, the programme has been turned into an annual event in conjunction with the school holidays," she said when launching the event here.
Also present were Shah Alam deputy police chief Supt Nek Zaidi Zakaria and Section 15 Fire and Rescue Station chief Azmel Kamarudin.
Dr Hasni also said regardless of religious background, people nowadays are aware of the importance of circumcision as a means to reduce the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
A total of 63 children from the Klang Disabled Children Care Centre and Rumah Jagaan Nur Ikhwan Klang also attended the event. -- Bernama
