KANGAR: A 30-year-old man was fined RM2,500 for posting an offensive statement against the Perlis mufti on Facebook last month.

Judge Azman Abu Hassan slapped the fine on Mohd Shukor Ishak, in default three months’ jail, after the accused pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) at the Sessions Court here today.

Shukor had posted a derogatory comment against Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin on his Facebook account “Mohd Shukor RK” with the intention to offend others at 6.30pm on April 30.

The posting, written in Malay northern dialect, accused Asri of not being a good Muslim role model because his wife and daughter did not wear hijab.

Shukor asked how would the people follow his advice as the state Islamic leader when Asri himself was not a righteous person.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Amril Johari prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
