JITRA: A Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) automated teller machine (ATM) at a Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) here was badly damaged in a robbery attempt using a homemade explosive.

The powerful explosion at 2.30am had completely destroyed the glass panel and door of the ATM booth.

However, the robbers escaped empty handed as the cash box of the machine remained intact.

Kubang Pasu police chief Superintendent Mohd Ismail Ibrahim said a member of the public alerted the police and Fire and Rescue Department after noticing smokes coming from the single-storey building when he passed by the premises.

He said the police forensic team found traces of sulphur on the left side of the machine.

"We believe the suspect(s) had used a homemade bomb to blow up the ATM machine to get access to the machine's money box.

"However the explosion failed to cause enough damage, forcing them to flee the scene," he said.

Mohd Ismail said police were scrutinising the CCTV (closed circuit television) recording at the building since the security camera installed on the ATM machine was damaged from the explosion.
