KUALA LUMPUR: Two friends were sentenced to five years jail and a stroke of ‘rotan’ each for robbing an antique store owner here last month.
Judge Wan Mohd Norisham Wan Yaakob meted out the sentence against Tai Kok Hoo, 43, and Hasselhoff Nonis, 30, after they pleaded guilty to the offence at the Sessions Court here today.
The duo, together with another person still at large, were charged with robbing Yong Ah Lee, 56, of old currencies worth RM10,000 at an antique store about 11am on Nov 3.
The offence falls under Section 395 of the Penal Code which carries maximum 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping.
The duo, who was represented by Zulkifli Awang, pleaded for lighter sentence, stating that they were remorseful of their crime.
“This is the first offence committed by my clients,” he said.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Norakma Farhan Aziz pressed for a deterrent sentence.
“This is a serious crime and involved public interest,” he said.
According to the fact of the case, the duo had gone into the store, approached the victim and pepper sprayed him.
They then tied up the victim and locked him up in a room before ransacking the shop.
