KUANTAN: A religious school volunteer worker will be charged at the sessions court here tomorrow with 38 counts of sodomising and molesting young boys at a tahfiz here.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Othman Nanyan said the 41-year-old man allegedly began committing the acts on 10 victims between July last year and February this year.

He said the suspect, who is also an education assistant at the school, had been carrying out his alleged abuse at the school hostel and his house here.

"Based on investigations, it was revealed that his victims were students aged between 14 and 17, from the school.

"Six victims were sodomised while four others were molested multiple times over the last eight months," he said in a statement here today.

Othman said the suspect will be facing 29 charges under Section 377C of the Penal Code; and nine under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

The suspect was detained on March 12 following a report lodged at a district police station by a tahfiz teacher after several students alleged they were sexually molested by him.

The man, who had been donating daily necessities and clothing to the school since 2015, was remanded until March 26.

Under Section 377C of the Penal Code, the suspect can face imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping if found guilty; while Section 14(a) carries a maximum jail sentence of up to 20 years and a liable whipping, if convicted.
