KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu’s iconic Pasar Kedai Payang has been given an attractive paint makeover to usher in Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The colourful painting of the market’s exterior is part of the state government’s New Terengganu Transformation (TTB) plan to spruce up the city during the fasting month of Ramadan.
Kuala Terengganu mayor Mohd Zulkifli Abu Bakar said the TTB concept encompasses cleanliness, brightness and liveliness in line with ‘Visit Beautiful Terengganu 2017’.
“As the state’s administrative capital, it is evident that it is the centre of attraction for tourists.
“Hence, it is only proper to spruce up the city to make it more attractive for the visitors, especially to a place like Pasar Kedai Payang which is a must-stop shopping destination for them,” said Zulkifli.
He added that the painting covered the entire five-storey shopping complex that provides 270 high-rise parking lots and 21 shopping lots.
The top floor, he said, is occupied by the market complex’s management office which also provides an additional 80 parking lots for council staff.
“The market complex is over 30 years old and it is high time to give it a new coat of painting ala the colours of the rainbow, interspersed with murals of batik and songket.
“This is to depict the many traditional items sold at the market,” he said, adding it gave Pasar Kedai Payang a new dimension, yet retaining its old charm.
Pasar Kedai Payang is slated to undergo a RM78 million facelift that will transform the traditional wet-and-dry daily market into a modern central market.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had announced this late last year during a visit to Terengganu.
Najib had said that the time had come for the old complex to make way for a modern pasar (market) in view of the changing times and to meet the requirements of modern day living.
