KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak wants the tragedy which befell the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school to be taken as a lesson so that it does not recur.

“I feel sad about the fire at Pusat Tahfiz Darul Ittifaqiyah. Let us all take this as a lesson so that it does not recur. All tahfiz centres are obligated to follow safety regulations and standards which have been set as it involves lives,” the prime minister posted in his Facebook account.

He also called on the Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department to ensure that children get to study in safe and conducive conditions.

The pre-dawn fire in the dormitory of the tahfiz school in Datuk Keramat has so far claimed the lives of 23 people, including two wardens.

Six other students, four of whom are in critical condition, and an outsider who tried to rescue the victims, have been hospitalised.
