KUCHING: A woman had a close brush with death when an uprooted tree smashed onto the roof of her car during a storm yesterday.

The woman escaped with minor injuries to her head and body during the incident, which occurred near Kampung Sungai Lumut in Santubong near here at about 3pm.

“The victim was rushed by the police to the nearest hospital for treatment,” said a state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman.

The department received 19 distress calls on uprooted trees statewide.

“The Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Station received six reports on trees uprooted by heavy rain including the one in Kampung Sungai Lumut.

“The other five distress calls were reported in Siol Kanan, near Sekolah Kebangsaan Astana in Jalan Bako, near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tun Ahmad Zaidi, Taman Pelita Jaya and Jalan Sungai Tengah in Matang.

“No casualties or injuries were reported,” said the spokesman.

There were three reports received on trees falling onto houses in Kampung Tabuan Hilir and Kampung Segedup, both located in Kuching, as well as in Jalan B7, Lambir near Miri. No injuries were recorded from these three locations.

“There were six cases of fallen trees reported in the Miri division, two similar cases in Sibu and one each in Serian and Lundu,” the spokesman said.
