Palm oil and rubber estates surround the 2,000-year-old site

ALOR STAR: The Kedah government has pledged its full support for the application of world heritage site listing for Sungai Batu.

State Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Rawi Abd Hamid said the state government would assist the National Heritage Department in submitting the application.

Rawi said the application to join United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (Unesco) world heritage list would boost the state’s tourism sector.

“I will try to get Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah’s approval to discuss this with the National Heritage Department.”

State Tourism Department director Annuar Abdul Razak said the Unesco listing would turn Sungai Batu into a tourist attraction.

Anuar said the department was working closely with Universiti Sains Malaysia Global Archaeology Research Centre and the state government to promote the complex.
