KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today that a plan is underway to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure 30 per cent women representation in the Dewan Negara.
He said this would be the reward to all women in the country should Barisan Nasional win big in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14).
"I just want to say that I am happy with Wanita (Umno) and I place a lot of hope on them. I appreciate your sacrifices.
"I will make good my promise to amend the law to make it compulsory to have at least 30 per cent of women as senators or policy makers.
"I need a big win to make it possible," he said. The crowd in the Tun Dr Ismail hall then cheered with a resounding "Boleh!" in reply to his challenge.
Najib spent about 20 minutes with the delegates in the hall and later presented the national-level 'Ibu Terbaik' award to Tan Sri Zaleha Ismail for her inspirational role as a mother and politician.
He also launched a book titled 'Ibu Terbaik Bangsa' which immortalise Zaleha as an icon for women.
Earlier, the prime minister launched an exhibition on the Survival of Muslim Rohingya at Level Four of the Putra World Trade Centre before making a short visit to Dewan Tun Hussein where the Youth wing had its assembly.
