KUCHING: A senior citizen lost RM8, 000 after being a victim of a parcel scam from an Instagram acquaintance here recently.

Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Ghani Abdullah said the 61-year-old victim claimed that he was closely acquainted with a man known as John Lee since October.

“In the same month, the victim received a message from John Lee who said he had sent a parcel containing cash, bags and an iPhone.

“After that, the victim also received a phone call and WhatsApp from an unidentified individual who asked him to put a sum into three local bank accounts between Oct 22 and Jan 7 to enable him to claim the gifts,” he said in a statement here, today.

Mustafa said the victim after realising he was deceived, had lodged a police report yesterday. –BERNAMA
