KOTA BARU: Two men attempted to steal a cow on Sunday by luring the ruminant from its grazing area at Kampung Bechah Terap here, and cramming it into a Perodua Kancil.

As they were making a getaway, however, they were spotted on the road by villagers. In a panic, the two men fled the car and escaped on foot.

Kota Baru district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rahim Daud said the incident occurred at about 5pm.

"According to villagers, they had spotted the two men (from a distance), pushing the cow into a Perodua Kancil. (The duo had apparently stolen the) animal, which had been tied at a nearby irrigation canal.

"When the vehicle passed close to Kampung Padang Bemban, the villagers decided to stop the vehicle, as they suspected something amiss.

"Seeing the villagers, the driver and his passenger escaped into nearby bushes," he said.

Abdul Rahim said the villagers then informed the cow’s owner about what had transpired, and a police report was lodged.

Police later arrested one of the two suspects.

"The 43-year-old man was picked up at Kampung Panjang here, at about 10am this morning," he added.
