KUALA LUMPUR: Umno can capitalise on the Opposition's disarray as they are still struggling to find a common ideology.

However, Umno and its component parties will need to formulate the right strategy while ensuring the coalition's machinery works as a unit in facing the 14th General Election (GE14).

Kedah Umno vice Youth chief Mahadzir Hamid said party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak has made it clear to the delegates in his policy speech today that the opposition is not a credible alternative to the Barisan Nasional government.

As such, he said the Umno machinery will need to work harder in explaining this to the people so that they will be able to make a wise decision in the GE14.

Mahadzir, who is also Jeneri assemblyman and Sik Umno Youth chief, said Najib has pointed out that things are far from well in the Pakatan Harapan pact despite them levelling the BN government with all sorts of accusations.

"Clearly, as the president pointed in his speech, there are four 'captains' in Pakatan Harapan, so how are they going to govern effectively when they cannot even have a consensus on who should be the true leader," he said when commenting on Najib's policy speech at the opening of Umno 2017 Annual General Assembly in Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here today.

Contrary to Pakatan Harapan, Mahadzir said Umno and BN have clear planning and vision to take the country to greater heights.

Mahadzir agreed with Najib that Umno should wake up to the current political reality and challenges in the next general election.

"It will be a totally different general election for us this time as we will be facing former Umno leaders but it is not the first time we're are battling with Umno splinter parties.

"This is not the first time Umno is being challenged by former leaders but the party has survived all the turbulences and tests," he said.

On the threats from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), Mahadzir said Umno, particularly in Kedah, needs to adopt a winning mentality and work hard as unit, as mentioned by the party president.

"We are not taking their presence lightly so we need to continue going to the ground to rebut and explain issues raised by the opposition," he said.
