KUALA LUMPUR: Blogger Syed Akbar Ali’s hopes of getting Umno declared illegal and deregistered similar to what Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad did 30 years ago in 1988, will not work this time around.

Political blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin said that back then in 1988, Umno was ‘successfully’ declared illegal and Dr Mahathir got rid of Team B by setting up and registering a new party called Umno Baru.

Raja Petra said Syed Akbar was wrong to think that Umno would not be able to contest the 14th General Election on May 9 using the same trick.

Writing on the news portal, Malaysia Today, Raja Petra said Syed Akbar was recycling the 1988 move to get Umno deregistered with a hope it could work yet again.

Earlier today, sixteen Umno members who challenged the legality of the party were sacked with immediate effect.

It was reported that they were asking the court to compel the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to provisionally dissolve Umno, and for RoS to suspend all Umno’s activities until the judicial review is completed.

The applicants are also seeking a declaration that all Umno branches and divisions and the supreme council do not have legal effect, and should be dissolved effective April 20.

The applicants are also seeking a certiorari order to cancel any decision by RoS, which allowed an extension of time for the Umno elections at all levels.

The 16 are arguing that the last day for Umno branches to hold their elections was on Feb 28 and the last day for the supreme council and 191 divisions to function was Thursday (April 19).

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said they were believed to be opposition moles and he knew the mastermind behind the plot.
