KUALA LUMPUR: Donning masks, Malaysia’s national teams (men and women) left for Manila this morning to compete in the Badminton Asia Team Championships.

Defending champions China and Hong Kong are forced to withdraw their teams from the Asian meet as the Philippines have imposed travel bans on them due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Malaysia captain Lee Zii Jia is not overly concerned with the coronavirus outbreak.

“I feel that we shouldn’t worry too much. We understand that we need to wear masks in crowded places and most importantly, take care of ourselves first,” he said.

Team manager Wong Choong Hann said: “We have briefed everyone based on the standard operating procedures as advised by the National Sports Institute (NSI)’s medical team.

“This is not the first time we’ve had an outbreak. I experienced the SARS outbreak in 2003. I will share my experiences with the players on how to handle themselves,” he said.
