SINGAPORE: Get ready for the great Causeway rivalry that ignites football rivalry and excitement from north to south.

The Selangor Selection will be raring to recapture the Sultan of Selangor Cup from Singapore when the 17th edition of the competition is held at the Shah Alam Stadium on August 25.

Selangor, who last won the trophy in 2014, want to have the bragging rights again.

Sultan of Selangor Cup chairman Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said: “This year’s event is a continuation of the friendly series between Selangor and Singapore, which has been held since 2001 to commemorate the traditional rivalry between the two teams during the Malaysia League in the past.”

The August 25 date was chosen by Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Besides the main event and veterans competition, the School Challenge Trophy which was introduced last year, will also be retained.

"The School Challenge Trophy has added another dimension to the tournament as it promotes sportsmanship from the school level,” said Abd Karim.

Abd Karim was speaking during a press conference today after a meeting with Singapore delegates at the Singapore Football Association office at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Singapore delegation chairman Teo Hock Seng was also present at the meeting.

Abd Karim said the veterans’ match will be played at 8pm followed by the main match at 9pm. The School Challenge Trophy will be held earlier at 5pm.

"The event will be held in a carnival atmosphere. There will be activities for fans of the Sultan of Selangor Cup who come from all races and all walks of life. More than 70,000 fans have filled the stadiums in every edition."

The 16th edition, held on May 6 last year, saw Selangor and Singapore veterans emerging joint winners after drawing 0-0 at the Singapore National Stadium.

The Singapore Selection retained the Sultan of Selangor Cup after defeating Selangor Selection 3-2 and Singapore also won the inaugural School Challenge Trophy after beating Selangor Schools Selection 4-3 on penalties.

Excluding the 2004 and 2015 editions, both Selangor Selection and Singapore Selection have won the Sultan of Selangor Cup seven times each.

Both hte teams were named joint winners in 2004 while in 2015 the match was called off due to haze.
