'Proceeds from plastic bag charge channelled to environmental group'

RODRIGUEZ told Actionline he found it strange that a pizza restaurant chain’s 20 sen charge for plastic bags for takeaway orders was not included in his receipt.

“I know it is only 20 sen, but I wonder where the money goes to.  It is odd why the plastic bag is not stated in my receipt when I paid for it,” he said.

A Domino’s Pizza spokesman told Actionline that the proceeds from the 20 sen charge would be channelled to environmental organisations.

She said the implementation of the “No Plastic Bag” initiative by the company started in February and was for takeaway orders only.

“Since the implementation, Domino’s Pizza has taken the effort to inform our customers about this initiative by putting up notices at our stores.

“We wish to highlight, for the benefit of our customers, that the 20 sen fee is charged for plastic bags on a transaction basis and not for every plastic bag,” she said.

She said the move was in support of the nation’s effort to ensure a sustainable future.

“This move is part of our efforts to contribute towards a sustainable environment by encouraging our customers to reduce the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags and polystyrene.

“Domino’s Pizza supports local government initiatives and continues to develop our policies in line with directives from the authorities.

“Should there be changes, we will reflect this accordingly in our operations,” she said.
