Sandakan district library too hot to study in

SANDAKAN: For the past five months, visitors to the Sandakan district library have been enduring scorching temperatures as the air-conditioning system in the building is not working.

A patron, who wanted to be known only as Jamie, expressed disappointment at the delay in repairing the central air-conditioning system.

She said she often brought her family to borrow and read books at the library.

“I could feel the heat the moment I entered the building. The main doors are kept open (due to the ventilation problem), but it does not help. I feel like I am in a sauna.”

She said a notice put up at the entrance stated that the
repair work was under the purview of the Public Works Department.

“The management should prioritise solving the problem. I feel sorry for the library staff, as well as students who come here to study for their examinations.”

She said the library was an important venue for students who did not have a conducive environment to revise or do homework at home.

A Sandakan division Public Works Department spokesman said they have opened the tender process for the repair work. It ends today.

“Previously, when we offered the tender process, only three companies responded.

“The requirement is that at least five companies must submit tenders. So, we had reopened the tender process.”
