M'sian car sales in high gear, with 50,600 units sold in May: MAA

KUALA LUMPUR: Monthly car sales continue to grow in Malaysia, with demand for passenger vehicles remaining in the top spot compared to commercial vehicles, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) revealed today.

In its monthly report on car sales in the country, the MAA said that sales volume in May 2017 was 50,600 units, up 18 per cent (i.e. 7,854 units) from April 2017.

In a month-for-month comparison, the MAA's report showed that May 2017’s volume was much higher than the 44,668 units sold in May 2016.

The MAA said that the sales increase is attributable to the pre-Hari Raya festive season boost and also launches of new car models.

In its outlook for June 2017, the MAA said that sales volume for June 2017 is expected to maintain May 2017’s level, as there will be a continuation of Hari Raya festive season promotional campaigns.

As for year-to-date (y-t-d) May sales, 2017 has seen 234,186 units of cars (both passenger- and commercial vehicles) sold, compared to 2016's y-t-d May figure of 218,121 units sold.
