New vehicles sales in June ease 12 pct

KUALA LUMPUR: New vehicles sales dropped 12 per cent to 50,275 units last month from 57,362 units a year ago.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said this was due to a short working month with the Hari Raya holidays.

On a month-on-month basis, the total industry volume (TIV) eased 0.6 per cent or 325 units compared to the figures in May.

Still, year-to-date TIV is in a healthy mode with a 3 per cent expansion to 284,461 units over the same six months of 2016.

MAA expects the TIV for this month similar to the figures in June.

Any bullish July sales outlook is bogged down by the expected delays in vehicle registrations due to uncertainties arising from the liberalisation of motor insurance effective this month.

In terms of production, the number eased to 32,179 units last month from 40,928 units in the same month in 2016.

For the first six months, the number stood at 255,318 units, down from 262,963 units in the same period last year.
