EEV penetration to hit 60 pct this year

CYBERJAYA: Proton Holdings Bhd, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua (Perodua) and the local automotive industry have played a major role in increasing energy-efficient vehicles penetration in the country, said International Trade and Industry Second Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.

As a result, the country is now a step closer to achieve 60 per cent EEV penetration of the total industry volume (TIV) by end of this year and on the right track for 80 per cent penetration in 2022.

"Producing EEV is a rather complex effort, as it requires expertise in multiple fields of technologies.

"However, I understand that this challenge can be overcome by our national brands, after having introduced various new EEV status models since NAP2014 was announced," he said at at Industry 4.0 exhibition here themed 'The New Horizon of a Data-Driven Economy.'

"EEV penetration rate this year was very good as it reached 45 per cent of TIV as of October 2017," he added.

Ong said MITI and other agencies will continue to work together to enhance the local automotive industry's capability and competitiveness to help increase the EEV penetration rate.

Meanwhile, Ong said Malaysia Autoshow 2017 has registered RM750 million in sales, higher than RM700 million recorded last year.

It also has attracted more than 250,000 visitors within five days of the exhibition, he added.

With an overall size of 82,000 square meters, Malaysia Autoshow 2017 is the largest Autoshow in the Asean region.
