Tabung Haji announces 'hibah' of RM2.7bil to depositors

PUTRAJAYA: Tabung Haji (TH) today announced depositor bonus (hibah) of 4.5 per cent for the financial year 2017 plus an additional bonus of 1.75 per cent for depositors who have not performed the haj.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said the two bonuses amounting to RM2.7 billion would benefit nearly 8.7 million active account holders.

"The bonuses have already taken into account the payment of zakat amounting to RM68 million," he said, when announcing the Hibah TH 2017 here today.

The total hibah rate for 2017 stood at 6.25 per cent, he said.

Also present were his deputy, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki; TH chairman, Datuk Seri Azeez Abdul Rahim and TH Group and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Seri Johan Abdullah.

Jamil Khir also said last year, TH had recorded a gross revenue of nearly RM4.5 billion, an increase of RM1.1 billion (31 per cent) compared to 2016.

"TH also records net profit after tithe (payment) of nearly RM2.8 billion, an increase of RM0.3 billion (13 per cent) compared to the year before.

"TH subsidiaries also contribute RM1.1 billion to TH's revenue in 2017," he added.

He also said TH would provide a subsidy of RM12,470 for each pilgrim for this year's haj season, involving 56 per cent of the total cost of haj.

"This is because the haj cost has increased from RM19,550 in 2017 to RM22,450 (this year). The total subsidy incurred by TH for this year is at RM400 million.

"For the past 10 years, TH has dished out a total of RM1.2 billion in subsidy. This clearly has shown TH and the government's commitment to ensure the welfare of Malaysian pilgrims," he added.

In line with good portfolio management practices, he said, TH has written off its RM470 million investment in oil and gas companies that were and still are affected by the turmoil in the industry.
